NPO Collaborations: Vermont 2-1-1 Connects Nonprofits and the Community

Vermont 2-1-1 turns five years old on February 11th (2/11) with good reasons to celebrate.  In 2009 the health and human services helpline logged a 53 percent increase in calls over 2008, and two additional staff members have earned Information and Referral Specialist certification by the Alliance for Information and Referral Systems, the national professional organization.

Vermont 2-1-1, a program of the United Ways of Vermont, was launched in February of 2005 to help people with health and human services needs connect with private, local, state and national agencies that can help meet those needs.  A free and confidential service available to everyone in Vermont,  is a local call from anywhere in Vermont by dialing 2-1-1.  MaryEllen Mendl, Vermont 2-1-1 program director, said the 2-1-1 Resource Database contains detailed information about the programs and services of over 800 agencies.

2-1-1 call specialists provide referrals on issues ranging from adult education and affordable housing, to legal counseling and veterans services.
