20% of Vermont Nonprofits Could Lose IRS Designation

Shannon Martin Dilley with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) office in Vermont alerted us to thisĀ  list of 1180 Vermont nonprofits who are at risk of losing their tax-exempt status. The National Council on Charitable Statistics reports that 6015 Vermont nonprofits were IRS recognized 501(c)’s inĀ  2008. That means 20% are out of compliance!

If your organization–or one you are connected to–is on this list, it is vital to know that the IRS is providing one-time relief to allow small tax-exempt organizations to come back into compliance and retain their tax-exempt status even though they failed to file for three consecutive years. Check these links for helpful information about eligibility and requirements to participate.
