[...] Stuart Comstock-Gay (Vermont Community Foundation) reported that Vermont’s nonprofit sector represents 19% of the Vermont Gross State Product –that’s $4 billion in revenue generated by mostly small nonprofits. Church Hindes (Visiting Nurses Association) reminded us that we are diverse sector with many sources of revenue (not just legislative) but that the human services in particular are reliant on the public sector–and vice versa. The government and funders want to know their investments are making a difference, stated Catherine Kalkstein (Vermont Women’s Fund). To do this, Gretchen Morse (United Way of Chittenden County) recommends that we reframe the priorities of our government. Nonprofits are not a burden on the state budget. Instead, we achieve important economic and social goals. Nonprofit organizations stimulate Vermont’s economy by training people to get new jobs, taking care of their children so they can work, growing food that is finding new markets, protecting the environment and preserving a quality of life that will attract others to visit and move here.
