From the report:

Last year was a year of change.  In Vermont we watched helplessly as Tropical Storm Irene plowed its way up the Connecticut River Valley.  The devastation this small state experienced was like nothing we had seen since 1927.  Roads washed away.  Homes, businesses and iconic covered bridges lost.  People forever changed.

The silver lining in these dark clouds, though, was that disasters like Irene often bring out the best in people.  At National Life we immediately set up a Red Cross donation drop for clothes and supplies.  Employees quickly volunteered to help their families, friends, and often complete strangers.  And the National Life Group Charitable Foundation provided emergency grants to help with relief efforts.  There is still more work to be done but as Mehran Assadi, president and CEO of National Life Group, said at an Irene press conference, “Taken together, working together, we will put Vermont back together.”

Although Irene dominated 2011, many non-profits continued to develop innovative programs or offer desperately needed support to those in our communities.  The Foundation also made over 70 grants that supported children and families, the arts, health and human services, education and the environment.

And this is just some of what happened last year…
