Mark Friedman, pioneer in nonprofit performance and the founder of Results Based Accountability (RBA)^TM, visits Vermont on September 12-13, 2012 in Montpelier for two special RBA training opportunities, open to Vermont nonprofit organizations seeking to learn a powerful, practical way to measure impact, manage performance, and tell your story in ways that strengthen your organization, increase sustainability and improve community well-being.

DAY 1: Sept. 12 – Results Based Accountability (RBA) 101 Training at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Montpelier, VT from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Open attendance (250 participants/ maximum).

Description: This one-day workshop, delivered by Mark Friedman introduces participants to the RBAframework. In the workshop, RBA is applied to both cross-community quality of life improvements and the management of programs, agencies, and service systems.

In the morning session, participants will get a full presentation of the framework, including how to:

• establish results and indicators of community well-being
• use results to drive decision making and budgeting
• identify performance measures for programs, agencies, and service systems
• use performance measures to improve performance
• link program accountability to cross community efforts.

In the afternoon, participants will apply these concepts to real work in a highly interactive, hands-on, “Turn the Curve” whole population exercise.

DAY 2: Sept. 13 – RBA Program Accountability 201 Training Session at The Chapel at Vermont College for the Arts (36 College Street, Montpelier) from 8:30am – 3:30pm. (Limited Seating).

Attendance Prerequisite:  Evidence of previous attendance of an RBA 101 with Mark Friedman, Benchmarks for a Better VT or other relevant RBA training.

Description: This one-day workshop, delivered by Mark Friedman will be an in-depth look at and work with the RBA framework for program performance measures.  In the workshop, RBA will be applied specifically to the management of programs, agencies, and service systems. Participants will learn to operationalize performance measures into a performance management system that includes performance based contracts.

Mark will give an overview of performance accountability; model the 5-step for developing performance measures; and provide examples/guidance for turning the curve on program performance accountability.

In the afternoon, participants will apply these concepts to real work in a highly interactive, hands-on, “Turn the Curve” program performance exercise. Small groups will then work on developing/refining performance measures for implementation.

About RBA/ Mark Friedman: Friedman is Director of the Fiscal Policy Studies Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico and outlined the RBA model for performance management in his seminal book, “Trying Hard is Not Good Enough“. RBA was first adopted in Vermont more than a decade ago, under the leadership of Con Hogan and the Vermont Agency of Human Services and by the United Way of Chittenden County–among others. Currently, Benchmarks for a Better Vermont is implementing a federal grant to increase the number of nonprofits using the RBA model and to connect them with policy makers to “turn the curve” on pressing community challenges.
