Now in its fourth year, NFF’s nation-wide survey provides robust data that is studied in detail by dozens of funders and featured prominently in leading publications (see previous results here). By filling the survey out, you help inform foundations, the media, government and other nonprofits about the state of the sector and showcase the smart decisions nonprofits are making to cope and adapt in difficult times.

The survey, which is anonymous and takes only 10-15 minutes to fill out, collects data on important financial and management issues facing the nonprofit sector.

Four St Johnsbury nonprofits—Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium, St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, St. Johnsbury Academy and Catamount Arts—will jointly promote the combined arts-and-culture resources that exist within their organizations and develop new opportunities for collaboration to enhance St. Johnsbury’s cultural climate and creative economy. The group is recognizing their proximate area in St Johnsbury as the Arts & Culture Campus.

“Along Main Street from the Fairbanks Museum to the corner of Eastern Avenue at the Athenaeum, down to Catamount Arts and back over to St. Johnsbury Academy, we see a geographic link amid our shared traditions of arts programming and community outreach,” said Jody Fried, executive director of Catamount Arts. “We view this area, which we’re calling the Arts & Culture Campus, as a jumping off point for arts programming in our town, inclusive of all of greater St. Johnsbury. People can come to town and easily circulate through this area to enjoy a concentration of fun happenings.”

The shared histories (largely descending from the vision and beneficence of the Fairbanks family) and strengths in the arts of the four local organizations will place a sharp focus on the rich cultural programs that St. Johnsbury offers to the public.

The alliance has created a logo and theme through which to advance the public’s thinking about what the town as to offer: “Get Inspired—St. Johnsbury’s Arts & Culture Campus.” The logo will be used with advertising and marketing materials to position St. Johnsbury as a dynamic center for the arts, statewide and regionally.

“Our efforts will be on coordinating events to give area residents and visitors a range of arts, culture and educational activities, so once they’re in town they have a range of fun opportunities throughout a day or a weekend,” said Anna Rubin, director of external relations for the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium. “With the local non-profits working in collaboration, we see this an exponential promotion of the arts in St. Johnsbury.”

The organizations in the coalition share:

• Rich cultural resources for visual and performing arts

• Identify potential Advocates for given Partners. Perform suitable investigation, including background check as per OCCA’s procedure on that matter;
• Respect and apply OCCA’s guidelines on confidentiality and report promptly to the Executive Director any confidentiality issue;
• Organize and participate in all necessary initial meetings between the various parties to proposed matches and present OCCA’s Advocate program in a true and realistic manner. Assess, as an ongoing process and in a realistic manner the potential success of each and every proposed matches and only proceed further if success can be reasonably expected;
• Provide all necessary training and information to the potential advocate;
• Finalize matches and assure follow up by providing ongoing assistance to maintain new relationship, leaving the content of that relationship to the participants;

This position is responsible for counseling families regarding obtaining suitable housing, social programs and subsidized housing programs; contacting and negotiating with potential housing providers; being an advocate for clients with various agencies to locate funding for back rent or security deposits; and coordinating efforts with other agencies on the family’s behalf.

Early Education Outreach Specialist

The early education outreach specialist is part of a team responsible for providing a multi-faceted educational program and system of support that enhances the ability of early childhood educators to provide high-quality care and education to young children in Windham County.

Specific responsibilities:

• Administer the Windham Bookmobile program
  • Conduct weekly bookmobile visits to child care providers and other identified sites during the bookmobile season

Qualifications:

Common Good Vermont is proud to be working on the Benchmarks for a Better Vermont project to strengthen the capacity of Vermont nonprofits. Working with BBVT consortium partners including Marlboro College Graduate School, the United Way of Chittenden County, the United Ways of Vermont, the Vermont Community Foundation and ServVermont, this federally-funded grant project is an exciting step for capacity building in Vermont.

Below are frequently asked questions that help explain the project.

Q. What is Benchmarks for a Better Vermont?

Benchmarks for a Better Vermont (BBVT) is a federally-funded grant project to strengthen the capacity of Vermont nonprofits. BBVT will help nonprofits use performance mea- surement to assess the impact of their work and maximize the use of limited resources. Using the Results Accountability framework, BBVT offers a “ladder of opportunity” for Vermont nonprofits to strengthen their ability to measure performance, better serve their clients, and increase sustainability.

Q. Who are the BBVT partners?

Six trusted state-level “capacity builders” are collaborating on carrying out BBVT, which is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service. BBVT consortium partners are Marlboro College (lead partner), Common Good Vermont, United Way of Chittenden County, United Ways of Vermont (United Ways of Addison, Lamoille, and Windham Counties), Vermont Community Foundation, and SerVermont.

Q. What are the components of BBVTs “ladder of opportunity” for Vermont nonprofits?

■ Vermont Nonprofit Conference 2012, Tuesday, March 20th, which will provide

a basic overview of Results Accountability, regional breakout work sessions, and some resources for further exploration, along with specifics on application process for Performance Institute. Learn more and register at http://npvt12.eventbrite.com.

■ Core Capacity Assessment Tool – CCAT is an online organizational self-assessment. CCAT assesses organizational effectiveness based on four dimensions: leadership, adaptability, management, and technical capabilities, as well as organizational culture. BBVT will provide some basic follow-up to help interpret results and direct nonprofits to resources to respond to the issues identified in their reports. BBVT will pay for 75 nonprofits to take the CCAT in late March,2012 – additional organizations can pay to participate.

■ Performance Institute for 15 small/medium nonprofits selected through a competitive process in May, 2012. The organizations will receive 15 months of training and technical assistance in developing performance measures using the Results Accountability framework. Selected nonprofits will gain the organizational capability to gather data, determine which activities/programs are most effective, focus resources, and share their story with funders and the community.

Q. How much training and technical assistance will the Performance Institute provide?

The Peformance Institute provides 75 hours of engagement over 15 months, beginning in June 2012. Performance Institute training and technical assistance (TA) will be provided through the following three strategies:

■ Group training events – 30 hours for three training events for the entire group:

A 2-day kick-off conference in June 2012, a skill-building day in 2013 through Vermont Interactive Television (VIT), and a final conference in the summer of 2013.

■ Cohort-level networks – The 15 non- profits will be divided into three cohorts of five organizations each. They will receive 25 hours of trainer-facilitated, cohort-level community learning and peer support, both face- to-face and online. The cohorts will master performance measurements skills, develop capability to bring those skills to their own organizations, develop a supportive learning community, and draft shared measurement standards that can be adapted for other Vermont nonprofits.

■ Individual TA to organizations – 20 hours of in-house, telephone and email TA to develop sustainable performance measurement systems tailored to specific missions, clients, contexts, and programs.

Q. What are the selection criteria for the 15 organizations that will participate in the Performance Institute?

■ Organizational focus on healthy futures, education, or economic development;

■ Under $1 million annual operating budget; priority to organizations with operating budget under $500,000;

■ Participation in the March 20th Vermont Nonprofit Conference;

■ Organizational readiness, as evidenced by CCAT score and possible other criteria;and

■ Required: Commitment of two to three organizational leaders to fully participate in Performance Institute activities. Board members are encouraged to participate.

Q. How much does it cost to participate? Thanks to support from CNCS and consortium partners, the Benchmarks program is free to participating nonprofits. What we ask from participating organizations is that they invest staff and board time in the work.

Each selected organization will get a $1500 stipend for participating – half at the beginning, and half upon completion in recognition of their commitment of time and effort.

Q. How will other Vermont organizations with a stake in performance measurement be involved in BBVT?

The BBVT Collaborators’ Circle will bring together funders, key consultants, state government leaders, and businesses that have been active in supporting and funding nonprofits. This group will be instrumental in informing the process of developing shared outcome measures and project direction/sustainability following the grant period.

Mandated by the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development branch, the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Program (DLT) is designed specifically to meet the educational and health care needs of rural America. Through loans, grants and loan/grant combinations, advanced telecommunications technologies provide enhanced learning and health care opportunities for rural residents.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced on December 8th, 2011 that 100 recipients in 34 states and one territory will receive $30,172,507 to improve access to health care and educational services in rural areas. Funding is provided through the USDA Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) Program. The announcement included a $499,870 grant to North Country Supervisory Union in Newport, VT and an $84,141 grant to Orleans-Essex VNA & Hospice also in Newport.

“This program delivers educational and medical opportunities that are urgently needed in remote, rural areas,” Vilsack said. “President Obama has said that no matter where you live in America, you should have access to quality educational opportunities.  Rural Americans deserve the same opportunities for education and medical care as metropolitan-area residents, and these funds will make that happen.”

Orleans-Essex VNA & Hospice, which provides home health care to a 1,000 square mile area in Orleans and northern Essex counties, will use the grant to continue implementation of in-home telemonitoring which was initiated in 2009.   An upgrade to the system will also expand the use of in-home videocams to monitor wound care.

North Country Supervisory Union will support the Northeast Kingdom Education Project that will link Lyndon State College (LSC) to 14 rural school districts primarily located in Orleans, Essex Counties.  Expanded videoconferencing technology at LSC will enhance their ability to offer dual enrollment courses in which high school students take college courses for both college and high school credit; provide information for students on the range of career opportunities available within key industries in the Northeast Kingdom and provide Masters in Education degree programs to the region’s teachers.

“Through this grant program, USDA Rural Development is working to level the playing field between rural and more urban areas.  Vermonters in the most remote locations will have access to advanced medical care and top notch educational opportunities because of these funds,” according to Molly Lambert, State Director for USDA Rural Development.

Garden Flood Relief in 2012 – New grants will help flooded gardens rebuild

Thanks to a generous Irene Recovery Fund grant from the Vermont Community Foundation, FBG will offer a new grant program  in 2012 to help rebuild flooded gardens.

This was a rough summer for farmers and gardeners who lost planting time and produce due to a wet spring and flooding from Topical Storm Irene. We have heard from community gardeners around the state lamenting the loss of food they were depending on for their families. One Hardwick gardener estimated that her lost fall harvest was worth more than $200. “We are noticing the pinch every time we shop,” she said.

One of the most seriously flooded sites was in Burlington. At Tommy Thompson Community Garden in the Intervale, 150 households lost their crops. “The floods have been a test of our resilience,” said Dan Cahill, Burlington Land Steward. “It was a significant blow to morale. At the same time people found a way to rise above it and look to the future.”

Thankfully, only a handful of community and school gardens around the state suffered major damage from the flooding, but the impact is devastating to the households who lost their food and to those faced with the task of rebuilding – or relocating – their gardens. Many more sites lost topsoil and need to rebuild the nutrient base of their gardens.

The grants will help community and school gardens affected by flooding rebuild safe and secure food production sites. Mini-grants will range from $100 to $1,000 to cover soil testing, soil amendments, replacement fencing, infrastructure for new garden sites, and technical assistance.

Two Grant rounds ANNOUNCED for Projects Focused on Lake Champlain

Grants are now available to support projects focused on Lake Champlain through the Lake Champlain and Tributaries Restoration Fund and the South Lake Champlain Fund, both housed at the Vermont Community Foundation.

The Lake Champlain and Tributaries Restoration Fund was established by Central Vermont Public Service (CVPS) in 2009 as part of a comprehensive settlement agreement with the Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) for the Lamoille River, Carver Falls, and Silver Lake Hydroelectric Projects. CVPS contributed $500,000 to the fund.

Matching funds are required, and grants will be awarded for new initiatives, one-time special projects, or continuing funding for outstanding, existing programs that address one or more of the following purposes:

• Protect, restore, and enhance the ecosystem integrity and ecological connectivity of the community of aquatic life in the Lake Champlain ecosystem and its tributaries.
• Protect, restore, and enhance lake sturgeon and their habitats in the Lake Champlain basin and its tributaries.
• Restore a self-sustaining land-locked Atlantic salmon population in Lake Champlain through habitat restoration and fish monitoring programs.
• Protect the riparian zones along Lake Champlain tributaries for the benefit of the ecological and recreational resources through the purchase of land easements.

The Lake Champlain and Tributaries Restoration Fund will award grants totaling approximately $50,000 this year. Applications must be emailed or postmarked on or before December 2, 2011 and applicants will be notified of decisions by December 23, 2011.

Established in 1989, the South Lake Champlain Fund makes grants that support research and education and help effect positive environmental impact on the southern portion of Lake Champlain, defined as that area of Lake Champlain south of Crown Point. The fund also has a goal of supporting projects that involve experts and other people who live in the southern Lake Champlain region. Typically, three to nine grants are awarded each year—one to three grants range from $5,000 to $10,000 and the remaining grants range from $1,000 to $3,000. Matching funds are encouraged, but not required. Applications must be postmarked by December 1, 2011 and grant decisions will be made by February 28, 2012.

3SquaresVT is our nation’s leading defense against hunger and 93,000 Vermonters participate.  The program is proven to decrease food insecurity, improve health outcomes and lift Vermonters out of poverty.  It is critical that in this recession and particularly post-Irene, Vermonters who may be eligible for 3SquaresVT have the access and assistance needed to get the maximum benefits to which they are entitled.  There are still thousands of eligible Vermonters not yet participating.

This training, open to new and seasoned advocates and providers, and anyone interested in helping more Vermonters access these important nutrition benefits, will cover eligibility and benefits, with a focus on target populations (working families and seniors), as well as the application process and tips for helping people apply.  We will also discuss barriers, strategies to overcome them, and advocacy to strengthen the program.

The Institute for Visualization and Perception Research (IVPR) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, led by Professor Georges Grinstein, is internationally recognized for its history of work in data analysis and visualization.  Building on earlier IVPR software packages such as the Universal Visualization Platform and an early desktop version of an interactive visualization platform, IVPR students and researchers have worked for the past two years to develop Weave: a web-based analysis and visualization environment.

Weave is a state-of-the-art high-performance, open source, data analysis and collaborative visualization platform. It is highly interactive, providing quick turn-around time for data exploration, analysis and visualization. It includes a broad range of tools for uploading data sets and customizing visualizations. Weave allows users to examine data from any location at any time.

Brief Background on BBVT: Awarded to Marlboro College by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), BBVT brings together a consortium of partners  to strengthen Vermont nonprofits. Common Good Vermont; United Way of Vermont and the United Ways of Addison, Chittenden, Lamoille, and Windham County; SerVermont; the Vermont Community Foundation; and Marlboro College all play key roles.

BBVT begins with a basic training at the Vermont Nonprofit Conference on 3/20/12. Following this, a formal assessment and competitive process will select 15 small to mid-size nonprofits for a 16-­month intensive Performance Institute. We will use a widely recognized model for tracking outcomes, known as Results Based Accountability.  BBVT will also convene a group of grant-­makers and other stakeholders to advance statewide discussion of systems of performance management.

Next month, the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program will host “Governing for Nonprofit Excellence” on its Cambridge Campus. The four day event is for voluntary members of nonprofit boards looking to enhance their leadership skills.

The event includes several discussions on various topics, such as the changing dynamics between boards and CEOs, the revamping of governance systems to maximize success, and guiding organizations in the measurement of organizational performance. The goal of these sessions is to challenge each participant to examine his or her role on the boards they serve and think about how to increase organizational effectiveness.

Sign*A*Rama is offering a series of grants for signs, lettering, trade show displays and graphics for charitable and non-profit organizations to support their good works.

Qualified organizations are invited to apply for an award of free or discounted signage to be applied to the acquisition of a specific sign or graphic project.

The deadline for applications to be received for consideration in the 2012 Grant Cycle is Monday, December 5, 2011. Application forms are available online or by calling us at 802-863-6233.

Applicants can use the program to fill an identified need, large or small, from building signage to name tags for volunteers. These, and any type of signage in between, are legitimate needs for the purposes of Sign*A*Rama’s Grants for Success program.

As the NPQ feature warns: “if the Supercommittee includes the charitable deduction with changes to other deductions, it will be too late for nonprofits to ask for reconsideration. There will be no second chances. We must lift our voices now or suffer the consequences of our silence tomorrow.”

The results: Many of the respondents (25) were from Chittenden County (7) but there is an interest in meetings in Rutland/ Addison Counties, Central Vermont and the Northeast Kingdom. The majority of the ED’s surveyed are interested in coaching have explored leadership development in the past. They’d like to set aside time from their “pressing demands” to focus, in an ongoing way, on issues that face them, such as work/life balance (87%), holding staff (and board) accountable (64%) and making tough decisions (34%). Most folks are interested in morning sessions, citing “the earlier the better”.

Mount Mansfield Community Television is hiring: Part time Video Programming, and field production position.

Part Time Control Room Manager – Primarily responsible for preparing and scheduling programs for the channel and all other control room duties:

Programming the MaestroVision video server; downloading, processing and logging Vermont Media Exchange (VMX) programs; maintaining a log of programs aired; capturing DVDs; basic maintenance of the video server and all control room equipment; updating the program schedule as needed.

Additional responsibilities include some field production and studio production, post production, and training of the public as needed.

Skills and experience:

Related experience on the same or similar video server highly desired. Computer literacy is a must, preferably with proficiency using both Windows and Mac-based platforms. Experience video recording community events and meetings, studio programs. Experience in digital editing (Adobe Premiere, Apple Final Cut Pro) is a plus.

Hours: Position will average 20 hours per week

Marty Jacobs, president of Systems In Sync, has been teaching and consulting for twenty years, applying a systems thinking approach to organizations. She currently provides strategic planning and policy governance expertise for the Vermont School Boards Association and has worked with several school districts to engage them in community conversations. In the nonprofit sector, Marty provides strategic planning, board leadership training, Policy Governance implementation, community engagement facilitation, and staff development. Below is an excerpt from System in Sync’s Monthly Newsletter 

As is always the case for me in the fall, I have been busy with a variety of events, and it’s not often that these events coalesce into what I can only describe as an epiphany about the nature of social change. I just recently participated in a tele-learning seminar sponsored by Tamarack Institute for Community Engagement entitled “Collaborating for Impact.” The main speaker was John Kania, co-author of the Stanford Social Innovation Review article “Collective Impact.” In preparation for the seminar, I read the article and was blown away by the model proposed in the article. It is one that will completely change how we achieve outcomes in the social sector with the potential for profound impact on our communities.

Kania and co-author Mark Kramer suggest that the social sector, funders in particular, need to shift their focus from one of isolated impact to that of collective impact. In order for collective impact to be successful, the following five conditions must be present:

1. Collaborating organizations must create a common agenda.
2. These organizations must also share a measurement system that tracks indicators of success.
3. Stakeholders must work together in mutually reinforcing activities.
4. They must also engage in continuous communication.
5. There must be a backbone support organization that coordinates, supports, and facilitates thecollective process.

From a systems thinking perspective, Kania and Kramer are talking about creating a shared vision that looks at the whole rather than the individual parts. Kania described it in the seminar as creating a learning system, not just a learning organization. (For more information on learning organizations, click here).

The model they propose would require a comprehensive change in the way we address large-scale social problems. The current system we are in is, like many systems, trying to maintain equilibrium. The outcomes we get from that system are the outcomes that that system was designed to produce. In order to change the system to bring about different outcomes, we must first examine our mental models or the assumptions we make that drive our behavior.

And this is where the second event comes in. Last month I attended the NH Center for Nonprofits Leadership Summit, where Dan Pallotta spoke about the ideas presented in his book, Uncharitable. Although somewhat provocative, the underlying premise of the book is that we need to challenge many of the mental models that undergird the current system – beliefs around compensation, risk, advertising, and investment. Until we do so, it will be nearly impossible to achieve the level of social change that is possible in a collaborative system.

For me, these two ideas are threaded together through community engagement. There is a need to bring all stakeholders in the social sector together to examine the current system. It’s not about the “me” conversation anymore – it’s the “we” conversation.

Effective team leaders possess a commitment to the team’s goal and a willingness to give team members autonomy to demonstrate their skills.  We must also recognize that their behavior can reduce the effectiveness of teams as well.  By being reluctant to confront inadequate performance or requiring the team to address too many priorities, the leader negatively affects the teams’ ability to succeed.  We will look at the Hill’s Model for Team Leadership, a model where the leader occupies the driver’s seat, navigating the team by diagnosing problems and then taking action steps to correct problem.  The focus will be on how this model clarifies the complex nature of team leadership, offering an easy tool to aid leadership problem solving.  In this webinar we will target the skills or behaviors the leader needs to implement and enhance team task performance. What defines a Capital Campaign Hangover?

This is a period of time in which the intoxicating experience of a successful Capital Project, Capital Campaign, and relocation is replaced with the lingering headache of restoring a non-profit’s balance while adjusting to new physical surroundings, community impatience to regain the familiar, and shifting stakeholder expectations.

The purpose of this workshop is to draw upon our experience and address this little talked about universal challenge when undergoing capital expansions. The upside: If the process is managed well and with foresight from the very start, most symptoms of a post-project “Hangover” can be averted. We will identify five critical components that provide a blueprint for a smooth expansion and post-expansion period.

And while the stories of devastation are heartbreaking, the stories of community resilience come through loud and clear. At this time, it is evident that the greatest need for assistance is in communities south of Route 2 but especially in Windsor, Windham, Bennington, and Rutland Counties. Parts of Addison, Orange, and Washington Counties are also affected, particularly the Mad River Valley.

Many people are wondering and asking what they can do to help, so the Community Foundation wanted to share some recommendations with you, including two charitable funds that we have set up in the wake of this terrible disaster.

• As the stories in the news make clear, many Vermonters continue to experience urgent food, shelter, and infrastructure needs, so if you would like to make a donation for these immediate relief efforts, we recommend the organizations listed at the bottom of this email. • The number of large and small farms that are reporting losses of crops, livestock, and land is overwhelming, so we have partnered with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture to establish the Vermont Farm Disaster Relief Fund at the Foundation.
