I’m part of a group of Colchester residents, including the Colchester Land Trust President who have approached the Catholic diocese with a tentative offer to purchase Camp Holy Cross. We have asked them for time to raise funding. If our offer is accepted, we plan to engage another non-profit (a national organization) to contract with the Land Trust and manage the site with their and other organization’s programs.

The town of Colchester was invited to purchase the site (27-30 acres) but voters rejected the offer. I was on the town’s Camp Holy Cross Vision Committee. During that 4 week period of packed planning meetings participants identified several multiple money-making uses for the site, including banquets, weddings, concerts, gardening education, boat and bicycle rentals (the property is on Malletts Bay and adjacent to the Burlington to South Hero Bike Path), youth and elder hostel stay-overs, and public school outing programs.

The committee is wondering VCF might be interested in working with us as we move forward, hopefully, to purchase Camp Holy Cross.

I’ve registered for the VCF Annual meeting and look forward to learning more from VCF.

The Neil & Louise Tillotson Fund have done so much for the north country, Coos County and Dixville Notch. Once the grand resort is sold and the fund ended it will be a great loss for the north country. The loss of Neil and Louise was a great loss to us all up here who knew and loved them. Do a Google search about this “service”, and one will become a bit skeptical.
It was brought to the attention of Google and Intuit that the happy, successful business owners, that were used in the marketing material, did NOT use the google/Intuit website builder for their own sites. That’s a good one!
Read the fine print and you’ll see that you are lucky enough to only be charged $2 per month for domain parking, PLUS the annual hosting fee. That’s pretty high compared to the competiton.
Want eCommerce with that 3 page site? Sure do! Let’s upgrade.
Want a little phone support? Let’s upgrade.
Would you like to actually sell something? Yup, upgrade.

There are a lot of other reasons to be wary of this. It’s great to think that Google and Intuit (aka Quickbooks), have it in their hearts to help Vermont businesses get online. However, the bottomline is what counts here.
Have you tried to get assistance with QuickBooks lately? Have fun.

I attended one of the events in Burlington and found there was quite a heavy turnout. More than that, business owners were there to learn, ask questions, and get ideas. It’s a challenging area, helping SMB owners make that sometimes difficult leap onto the web, but I certainly feel like the Vermont Get Your Business Online program has all the makings of an important step in the right direction.

Google’s list of partners looks almost comically long, but if you think about it, it’s completely necessary in order to tie the vast Vermont small business community network together and really spread the word. I’m a native of the Green Mountain State, a long-time fan of Google, and someone who is about to launch a small business myself. It’s daunting at times, but this feels like an exciting time to be alive and in business.

One thing I’ve been wondering about a lot since the event is the figure that’s quoted again in your PR; that 63% of American small business don’t have a web presence. Do you know how “small business” is being defined for that figure? I’ve done quite a lot of research in the area during the planning stage of my internet marketing consulting business, and I turned up a variety of figures relating to the percentage of SMB with websites, but none of them were as low as this number. Most of the stats I found were around 50%, but the National Small Business Association released a study in 2010 saying that 84% of small business DO have a website. Now I’m curious where the real number is.

I will share here the response I also sent to VPR upon hearing the audacious claims of entitlement expressed in Mr. Schubart’s radio commentary.

Bill Schubart’s commentary on “Adequate Compensation,” in Vermont, not
only fails to counter the embarrassment the US should face about the greedy excesses of its executives, it actually serves to explain and exemplify why those excesses exist. That anyone could believe that $1,000,000 annual compensation is justifiable (especially in an entity of “public good”) seems to lack a real understanding and appreciation
for the lives of nearly everyone else sharing the world with him. Does Schubart not know that more than 80 percent of the world’s people live on the less than $2,000 a year? Just four hours of work for Fletcher Allen’s Executive Director? Does he not know that the teachers who teach his children make only 5 percent of his executive salary? That more than 1/4 of US kids go hungry everyday? That families live in fear, without health insurance? Does Schubart not know that the median family income in Vermont is only $50,000 a year — for a family? By what standard of living could anyone need to earn $83,000 a month when the median price of a home in Vermont is $220,000. What could one human being, one family, possibly need that could require so much money and could justify seeing others suffer in the face of their own personal gain?
Schubert instead argues that such a compensation is justifiable because it is in-line with what others in similar positions earn. Yes, exactly! That is the
point, and that is the problem. Over the past 30-plus years, executives, like
Schubart, have jacked up their own salaries, as the average wage (yes even in Vermont) has continued to decline, all the while creating their own, self-serving justifications for those excessive increases. As any wise father might say.. “If they jumped off a bridge, would you follow?” Or better yet, “Two wrongs, Mr. Schubart, DO NOT make a right.”
If VPR is interested in representing the views of the majority of its listeners,
perhaps it should seek out a similar commentary from the more than 50 percent of Vermonters who earn less than a livable wage, or the 80 percent who earn less than 10 percent of Schubart’s executive compensation. Most people in Vermont earn less than $15 a hour… and why? Because business owners and executives believe that they and other Vermont executives “deserve” $500 an hour. That is the reason why the US (and Schubart) should be embarrassed. It is utterly shameful!
Judging by Schubart’s argument though, it would seem Schubart has managed, quite adeptly though not quite successfully, to free himself of any such embarrassment. Good for you, Mr Schubart. Pride is important.. but it does not teach your children, grow your food, build your house(s), police your streets, or pave your roads. That, I am afraid, is reserved for the rest of us,the VAST majority of us, who work JUST AS HARD, IF NOT HARDER simply to get by – no justification required!

To Governor Shumlin:
So, here we go again. This time 13 million dollars will bring cell service and broadband to all Vermonters? In 2013? It has been promised many times for 2010, 2011 & 2012 in my memory. Our house actually has DSL, but the number of Vermonters here in southern Vermont who do not is an embarrassment to our state & country. More remote areas than Jacksonville/Whitingham in Africa are connected. So, exactly what is the plan on how this 13 million dollars of taxpayer money will be spent?
When, where, how, why, etc. I’m anxious to do my part in making this happen in other ways than just my tax dollars. I was unable to find a breakdown of these monies on the internet.

Thanks for all you are doing. It’s a busy time with Vermont Yankee being on top of your list, but the above situation is very basic to everyday life.

Church Hindes (Visiting Nurses Association) reminded us that we are diverse sector with many sources of revenue (not just legislative) but that the human services in particular are reliant on the public sector–and vice versa. The government and funders want to know their investments are making a difference, stated Catherine Kalkstein (Vermont Women’s Fund). To do this, Gretchen Morse (United Way of Chittenden County) recommends that we reframe the priorities of our government. Nonprofits are not a burden on the state budget. Instead, we achieve important economic and social goals. Nonprofit organizations stimulate Vermont’s economy by training people to get new jobs, taking care of their children so they can work, growing food that is finding new markets, protecting the environment and preserving a quality of life that will attract others to visit and move here. I thought yesterday’s non-profit Vermont legislative day was well planned, well delivered and well-attended.

One positive outcome for Lake Champlain Access Television was our opportunity to sit in on the Senate Economic Development Committee’s hearing regarding emerging broadband legislation. Board President, Dick Pecor and I stopped in to meet the committee’s vice chair, Tim Ashe, and discovered quickly that Comcast would be testifying. LCATV is engaged in contract negotiations with Comcast, so Dick and I enjoyed our serendipity situation and came away with several ideas along with a request by Sen. Ashe that we provide input to him within the next week if at all possible about ideas our VAN community believes should be considered by the committee before they vote the bill they are considering out of Committee.

Another positive outcome for LCATV was the impromptu opportunity to meet with some of our Colchester Representatives to discuss our current contract negotiation concerns and obtain promises of written support that we can submit to Comcast.

Thanks to the planning group for a great day.

RE: Single Payer legislative inititive…

Is the non-profit sector trying to put together a unified show of support for single payer? Maybe I missed it.
Adopting single payer would quite clearly have a life-changing, if not life-saving effect on nonprofits that are now cutting coverage AND STILL facing rising premiums and deductibles…. not to mention the effect on the 50 to 100,000 high need individuals that ALL human service non profits strive to empower.
This is a cross-sector concern (crisis?) but the nonprofit sector should be speaking loudly, forcefully, and collectively to counteract what will surely be resistance from the moneyed interests wishing to keep the status quo.
I’m not a nonprofit leader, but if I was, I’d be asking my colleagues why forming such a statement would not be in our collective best interest.

This latest does not take into consideration the 2000 national survey by CODA which found that the Vermont crafts community generated $343 million.

No comprehensive economic survey has been done that combines arts businesses, arts events, arts non-profits, fine art and craft, and auxillary spending as a result of arts events.

I thought this was condescending. I’m gen y and manage to engage in both board meetings and online discussions. Perhaps the absence of input from gen y made you forget that we are not all children incapable of intelligent conversation, apart from a fun activity that includes wifi, of course.

We are designed to look at human faces, clouds and trees, and, as of the last several centuries, organized sheets of printed material (that require and deserve our full attention), not blurts of text on electronic screens – especially when many of them amount to glorified drivel. Do we actually need scientists to tell us we are NOT capable of ‘multi-tasking’, NOT capable of maintaining our productive focus during the gazillion blurted “thoughts” that come our way daily? Can’t we all feel how bad it is for our mental processes? We need more than summer vacations. We need an overhaul of our daily lives.

Thanks for the mention of this training. I was wondering if you knew who I might contact at CCTV about pricing questions? I’ve followed the link to register, but the text in opening paragraph notes that the event is free to members, $10 for public and webcast, and additional $5 for lunch. But the fields to sign up include prices of $5 to $20. Any advice? I’m not a member, and would like to sign up for webcast. Thanks!
