In recent weeks, nonprofit organizations have been mobilizing against an emerging threat: the chance that Congress will limit tax deductions for charitable gifts. As lawmakers in Washington negotiate a way around the “fiscal cliff,” this strategy is being discussed as an opportunity to increase government revenue. Tax deductions provide an incentive for giving, and many nonprofit leaders fear that scaling back deductions will make it harder to raise money.
